By Don Heckman
What a great weekend. A remarkable synchronization , featuring performances of two remarkable Brazilian events . One is at the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro. As much as we’d all like to fly down to Rio, few Olympics fans will have ample funds for a quick trip south to experience the events live.
But there’s an alternative Brazilian solution right here in the heart of L.A. Two memorable performances at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday (tonight) August 12 and Saturday August 13.
The line-up offers plenty of Brazilian music at its finest, celebrating the Olympics in Rio across the full range of Brazilian pleasures.
The program features the samba/pop rhythms of Grammy-winner Sergio Mendes, celebrating the 50th anniversary of his influential band Brasil ’66 providing an electrifying evening of samba, capoeira, Bloco-Afro drummers and fireworks.
Add to that the intimate swinging bossa novas of Herb Alpert and Lani Hall.
Singer Dianne Reeves, the superb guitar work of Romero Lubambo, and singer Angel Blue also join the roster of stars. Thomas Wilkins will lead the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and a convincing Brazilian atmosphere will be provided by Raiz Brazil Dance Company and Viver Brazil.
Don’t miss these compelling performances. Remember that there will be plenty of Olympics television highlights to satisfy your appetite for stellar sporting events.
